A marketer focuses to tap the entire set of potential customers in the beginning. This involves making them aware of the product by the use of effective advertising, marketing, public relations, and other communication strategies. Awareness is followed by generating a lead by acquiring customer information in some sort. This information is then pulled into a  lead management system to nurture further down the funnel.
But this funnel didn’t just deliver amazing value, it also prompted me, very softly, to enroll in David Kadavy’s premium course that delivers lessons like the ones in Design Pitfalls. Not only did the Design Pitfalls funnel give me tons of information, engaging me every day for a week, but it also prompted me to continue my learning through a paid course.

Targeting these leads is the easy part; guiding them along the buying process is more challenging. For this, you’ll need an effective content strategy that provides them with the information they need and keeps them coming back for more. You’ll want to get these people signing up to your newsletter – or some other kind of email interaction – as soon as possible. This gives you a channel to segregate audiences and target them with more relevant messages that move them along the sales funnel.
The sales funnel we looked at from AWeber before may be a simplified version of what most brands are looking at these days, but the same principles apply. The only thing that’s really changed over the years is that we now need to pick up leads at every stage of the funnel in order to maximise conversions. We now put more focus on lead nurturing and optimising each stage of the consumer experience to prevent leads slipping away and buying elsewhere.

Yesterday I was in the Northridge Mall while my tires were being rotated at Firestone outside. When I walked in there a man was promoting Occulus, the 3D experience. . . for $5 a journey. I didn’t have any bucks so I declined. I was wondering why he didn’t use the email model of a free gift to get a subscriber; I mean a free trip using the mind altering adventure. Then I got to thinking about video and 3D in email, and it dawned on me the cycle of a company’s promotion is a like a trip into virtual reality–at least it could be a mind-altering experience for the recipient, especially for someone who’s tired of getting ads, ads, ads.
In this example imagine a real estate company that prints an ad for their services on a piece of card. On the card it doesn’t say too much about the company but simply shows pictures of some houses sold locally by the company and the prices those houses achieved. The cards also contain a link to the company’s website should the prospect wish to find out further information about the company’s services. These cards are then posted through the letterboxes of everyone who lives where the best buyers are for this business are. The complete marketing funnel for this real estate company is shown below.
It’s now time to really bring on the value and elevate your relationship with your customers. Following up with your recent buyers is one of the fastest ways to solidify your position as a business that truly cares. Buyers remorse is very real, and is alive and well across all markets and industries, so the first 24-48 hours after making a purchase is a critical time to calm any anxieties and affirm your new customers decision to do business with your company. It’s also unexpected. Which makes it an even nicer surprise, and part of the system to turn elevate your customers into brand evangelists who tell their friends, family, coworkers, and sometimes even strangers, about just how great your business is.
This challenge of value sequencing on a homepage is a microcosm of how to value sequence throughout the entire funnel. Here’s an example. SolarWinds posted 25% year-over-year revenue growth by sequencing value to potential buyers in its funnel. The software company built a funnel that started with overall educational content (e.g., network monitoring fundamentals, IP configuration, etc.) with higher-value content behind a registration barrier. This showed the overall value of the company in its understanding of the industry.
However, there are even some who see the funnel as being split vertically, with both sales and marketing owning the full funnel. They argue that the sales people are increasingly becoming thought leaders to drive awareness by doing outbound outreach. In this scenario, both marketing and sales would work to nurture leads and prospects from awareness to purchase.
