In addition to vocational occupations where I was able to do what I loved most - helping people, I have developed game apps and undertaken a variety of freelancing projects - amongst other things. But none of these jobs gave me the fulfillment I craved. I needed something bigger and better. So, I started a journey of self-education in a variety of different areas and began investing time and money. This enabled me to gain a deep understanding of the science and strategy that underpin marketing funnels, social media marketing, and different types of business models.
There are many different versions of the Marketing Funnel. I tried to only use very distinctive phases of the customer journey without becoming too specific, in order for this funnel to be applicable for a multitude of industries and businesses. The reason why the Marketing Funnel is a funnel is because the wideness of the funnel at every stage represents the amount of people belonging to it. Since you are likely to loose some potential customers along the way, the funnel gets narrower towards the bottom. Finally it is important to mention that the colours chosen for this marketing funnel are deliberate. In the beginning, your relationship with potential customers are rather ‘cold’ and are therefore coloured blue. Once you get to know your customers, you want to ‘heat’ things up a bit and make your relationship stronger until you reach the advocacy stage (orange). Let’s go through each stage one by one.

For example, the choice of having either Indian food or Chinese food is fairly straightforward and requires minimal time whereas offering managed IT solutions requires an investment costing thousands of dollars. Due to the differing time frames and value of the product, the prospects are more than likely to request for content during this consideration stage. A high number of competitors can lead to longer evaluation time, something experienced by 48% of businesses.
Signing up to the trial provides a low barrier way to acquire a customer and the customer enters the Trial part of our funnel. If at the end of the month they are enjoying the company’s service and are happy with it, they then move to the full price subscription. At this point they are a full customer and they have entered the Adoption part of the funnel.
A standard marketing funnel would usually contain some simple tools, but you do have to create these for your toolkit. So there is content creation involved to get copy and images and landing pages or forms etc. Whilst we use websites as a big part of the marketing funnels we create, you may not necessarily use one. We create a lot of content around the planning for a business website and then the development or build of a business website and then the marketing involved in making it deliver leads.
Targeting these leads is the easy part; guiding them along the buying process is more challenging. For this, you’ll need an effective content strategy that provides them with the information they need and keeps them coming back for more. You’ll want to get these people signing up to your newsletter – or some other kind of email interaction – as soon as possible. This gives you a channel to segregate audiences and target them with more relevant messages that move them along the sales funnel.
