I am currently a LegalShield associate (but not active) and have previously been involved with USANA. I was very recently approached about another opportunity with Shopping Sherlock. The video presentation looks interesting and it also seems like an affiliate-type program. I’m giving it some consideration. However, there’s a one-time fee of $249 plus a monthly membership fee of $34.95. Any thoughts or knowledge of this business?

In my experience buying from direct sales companies, most makeup companies send the product directly to the customer and the representative simply does just that - represent, without holding any kind of inventory or having to do any travel other than parties they can plan in their own time (and they're not even necessary). Good info for anyone considering Avon who may not have the time or energy to hand deliver each order.

An analysis of 32 income disclosure statements from direct selling companies by TruthInAdvertising.org found that 80 percent of distributors, or people selling their products, grossed less than $1,200 per year before expenses. At about half of those companies, the majority of distributors made no money at all. "Given that context, any income claim that expressly states or implies that this is a way for someone to gain financial freedom, to become wealthy, travel the world, become a stay-at-home parent is just false and deceptive," says Bonnie Patten, executive director for TruthInAdvertising.org.

Well they were hot…this company was caught in the act and had some shade thrown their way after they were found to have been over-inflating their health products for consumer purchase. But really though? What company do you know that doesn’t do this in the MLM health industry? It seems like a common practice, even if its “just a bit,” so they are able to pay out commissions made. Some perspective for the shade…their fiber product was 900% more costly than “leading alternatives” and their Trioten protein blend was 600% more pricey as well when comparing their products to companies such as Herbalife and Shaklee.
Along with the market itself, the number of potential prospects are also expanding with the movement of people getting out of the rat race and achieving leveraged income. Many of the highest paid professionals from major companies are migrating toward network marketing opportunities for this reason. Professionals in these position typically make a lot of money, but their time is extremely limited. Therefore, the value of leveraged income is paramount to their continued success, and they recognize the benefits of partnering with a network marketing company to bridge the gap.
My advice to someone looking into DS is to find something that you actually love and know that you could share with other people, not sell it to them, but share with them why you love it. I do fairs and events and I share with people how amazing these little hair clips are. I get excited about them and it shows. 90% of the women who try them on, end up buying them because they love them. So find something you LOVE and not something just to sell.
Statistics show that Mary Kay Consultants are the highest paid business women in America. 70% of the women in America who make over $100K/yr have a MK business and 2% of Americans are self-made millionaires and of that 2%, 80% are men and 20% are women. Of that 20%, 80% are with Mary Kay. The stats don't lie. They are also one of the ONLY companies that do ALL of their formulating, designing and creating in Dallas, TX. So, American made and all done in-house. They do not pay a third party to create their products for them. Pretty incredible, I'd say. This company also has 2 skincare lines that have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, meaning GH tested it and everything that the product claims, it actually does...how sad that only 1 other skincare line outside of MK can make that claim???!!! REALLY?? Shouldn't ALL skincare lines be able to make that claim?? MK also has the lowest attrition rate of all of the direct sales companies. Let the facts speak!
I just started selling for one of the top 15 and I went in knowing that this was just supplemental cash and nothing that would support my family. I spend 15 minutes (mostly from my phone) a day on my business and am happy with what I’ve done thus far. If it covers groceries and some extras like clothes or shoes, I’m good. If I start to become even more successful, great. It’s my competitive nature to want to out rank others, so I find it to be more of a personal challenge than thinking I’m going to get rich and stay rich. I appreciate the article and the no BS attitude.
When I first joined I only planned to be a consultant until we got back on our feet after my husbands job loss. But, I fell in love with the mission of the company, the products, and all of the friends I had made along the way. Plus no 9-5 job can compare to the flexibility of direct sales! Now, I have an amazing team who is truly helping make a difference in the world.
