But let's get down to the nitty-gritty. This isn't a cheap product and it's expensive to become and remain a consultant. At minimum it costs $45 to join the Rodan and Fields team but it can cost a much as $995 (yeah, you read that right--almost a thousand bucks) depending on your start up kit. The average kit goes for around $400 so it's no doubt an investment. The compensation guide looks like a science text-book with tons of graphics and colors and numbers. I know from a consultant though that monthly fee includes $25 for your website and $80 for inventory.
Well if you didn’t know before, this company is all about body shapers and nutritional products, with a “greens line” in their product line up as well.  The company got some built up heat in 2015, but have later cooled down a bit.  There was minimum quota of $112 that had to be met every month in order to earn commissions from the company and after a while their distributors had a hard time keeping up with these expectations. Not everyone (including their grandmothers) needs more than one or two body shapers. LOL.

In my opinion, of all the direct sales companies to make money with, Scentsy practically sells itself. Their wax warmers come in a wide variety of styles to fit your décor, they plug in so there is no worry about an open flame, and the many fragrances they offer will suit the pickiest noses. I was amazed at how many scents I liked and how similar to nature’s own fragrances they were. Scentsy offers many resources to help consultants become successful. You can host actual home parties, basket parties (similar to a catalog party), and you can even have a booth at a local fair if you’d like. Commissions are based upon your consultant level, but you’re paid monthly and funds are transferred directly to a Scentsy debit card, which is very convenient.

Surveys— These are a really popular way to make extra money in your spare time. Many surveys pay out between $1 and $5, but they’re sometimes hard to qualify for. If you’ve got time on your hands, they can be an easy way to make some extra money here and there. PineCone is one of my favorite survey companies and they pay $3 per survey. Not too shabby.


I'm surprised not to see Perfectly Posh on the list. They offer natural, and vegan skin care and pampering products that are budget friendly. The startup is only $99, no inventory requirements, low 6 month minimums, and a minimum of 20% commissions with reachable promotions in rank and pay. You get a ton of full size products when you sign up, plus a free website, and other marketing support materials. The sisterhood and teamwork is like nothing else I have ever experienced.

It can be tough work, but the 7 companies I’ve listed below provide awesome products, are great to their consultants and designers, and provide lots of resources to help you be successful. The commission I’ve earned from selling Scentsy, Thirty-One Gifts, and recently Origami Owl has helped me through some very tight times. As always, read the requirements of the consultant for each of these companies before making a decision. Do you need some extra cash? WHEN NANCY CRAMER WAS A young mother, she wanted to stay at home with her kids. It wasn't long, she says, before the multilevel marketing community found her and got her on board to start selling a line of vitamins and skincare products. There are no monthly quotas to remain active as a Compassionate Entrepreneur. You just need to have an order placed through your website (in any amount) once every six months to continue to stay active. There is also a $13.95 a month fee for running our personalized website and marketing portal (which collects customer/hostess data and sends out automatic emails 3x a month), but the first month is free.

So is it possible to make any money doing an MLM? After finishing all of his analysis and research on various MLM data, Jon Taylor concluded, “In every case, using the analytical framework described, the loss rate for all these MLMs ranged from 99.05% to 99.99%, with an average of 99.71% of participants losing money in an MLM. On average, one in 545 is likely to have profited after subtracting expenses and 997 out of 1,000 individuals involved with an MLM lose money (not including time invested)."

This article was really informative and honest! I’m not presently involved in an MLM and I don’t ever plan to be especially after reading this article and the comments below. Why? Well because of EXACTLY the kind of “networking” and “recruiting” that these companies and many of the people commenting on here are advocating. I have been bombarded on my facebook, and other social media from people I haven’t spoken to or seen in years. Its becoming constant, and I am not on social media to make money. Roden and Fields, shakeology, some girl I went to high school with is now trying to get me to buy leggins from her. I have a cousin that I actively avoid now because he is constantly steering every single conversation to Herbellife and why I NEED it to be healthy. Jesus. Its just enough already. I’m all for empowering people, and I love the idea of earning an additional income to take care of your family or yourself. But I could not imagine alienating or even just annoying friends and family in order to make an extra dollar. What I dislike most is that many of those that are recruiting make it seem as if they recruiting you simply because they want to “help” you or provide you with an opportunity. They make it seem as if they are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, when really the actual motivation is line their own pockets with more money, because the more people you recruit for your team, the more money you make. That feels dishonest and slimy to me. Unless I’m asking for “help” or an “opportunity” I wish people would assume that I don’t need and am not interested in one!

Hi Kierstin, this is a great list of DS companies. I researched a lot of these before signing up with Lilla Rose, whom I have been with for 18 months now. I just couldn't make myself pay a company for a website or have to sell a minimum quota each month regardless of my real job. I am a single mom with a full time job and two little ones (really little) so I wanted something that I would actually use and could sell to people with the purpose of sharing something that I genuinely think is awesome. Some months, I didn't have time to promote my product so I wanted a company where I didn't have to sell a minimum amount or have to maintain a website
