You, not stats, dictate your success. Like most things in life, success or failure mostly relies on the individual. Certainly, the MLM industry has a vast sea of reps who don't make much money or who quit, but there are reps who are meeting their income goals and some (a small few) are rich. The same could be said about bloggers and most other entrepreneurial ventures.

I love love love this article! I’m a business growth coach who works with small business owners and often leaders from other MLM’s. From time to time I’ll get someone who has been struggling significantly even getting started and I find that it’s sheer absence of knowledge of the numbers. They are still under the impression that if I get three, and they get three then we’re all going to be millionaires. It’s very sad but the truth is not being told. Being in an MLM is hard. But it is very doable. I have had significant success in the past, while I am not in an MLM now. Nor do I want to be, you must be all In to make it work. Thank you for sharing this. I would love to interview you on one of my webinars
However, I have been a Pampered Chef customer on and off for over fifteen years, and when I saw a few products online last June that I was interested in, I messaged the only consultant I knew (met once several months before) and had a online party. Then, on a whim, I signed up. Not because the consultant badgered me (barely even mentioned it). But when I realized the starter kit came with everything I needed (including catalogs and paperwork) and that there were no hidden penalties or fees if I didn't sell "enough" I though I'd try it for the summer just for fun. I had zero parties lined up and I decided ahead of time that I was going to make ONE post to Facebook about it and not rely on family members to make my business happen. And I'd just see from there. Seriously nothing to lose except the kit fee, which I got product for, at least. (side note: new kits came out recently and cost between $109 and $249, depending on which you choose. Plus, you can get $25 or $50 credit toward your kit when you host).
Actually, it really doesnt matter when you join a company. It all depends on the person deciding to jump in and work it as a real business. That means sharing your love of the products and showing up daily. You are compensated for your efforts if you should decide to build a team. You inspire, motivate, and lead others while working on your own business. In my experience, it’s extremely rewarding to know you have a opportunity or as i see it as a gift that is going to help someone.
Great article! Tons of valuable info to get people going. My daughter recently became a Young Living Essential Oil Representative and she loves it so far. Her sons have autism and the oils work great to help calm them down and also she rubs some on the belly of the one who has gastrointestinal problems and it helps him so much! My daughter made an awesome explanatory video about two of the start up kits. One was 160.00 and the other was 200 and something. I can see the difference in my daughter and my grandson who both smile a lot more. Thanks for sharing.
OK here is the difference Steve. If you quit any of these MLM companies for a whole year, Continue buying product but help no one set up a shopping account, even 2 years, will you continue to get paid by the company? So Steve, as a Director with Melaleuca you helped 8 people total set up a shopping account. There is no Direct or multilevel sales in that, and if they shop you earn commission on their shopping. You will not know what they shop for and thats ok cause its private. Melaleuca is a Consumer direct Manufacturer that sells to the public the products that THEY THEMSELVES make. So by your standards then …Proctor and Gamble is an MLM also. Oh and yes, I took over a year off of inviting people to see what Melaleuca was, and still received my residual check every single month. It is against company policy to sell Melaleuca products.
It Works is a direct sales company founded in 2001 by Mark and Cindy Pentecost that deals with skin care and nutrition products. The privately owned company got its breakthrough because of its flagship products like the Ultimate Body Applicator and other anti-aging and nutritional supplements designed to make it easy for consumers to stay fit and healthy. The company, which employs over 10,000 people, generates over $500 million in annual revenues annually.
There truly has never been a better time to join this life-changing company. You have the opportunity to make this business what you want it to be: a shoe fund, a mortgage payment, a vehicle payment, home-makeover, pay off debt, etc.  The anti-aging industry is worth over $250 Billion, and the sky is the limit when it comes to building your own successful business as a Rodan+Fields consultant.
Ladies (and gents) all across the country are earning extra income and creating sustainable home businesses for themselves and their families by selling products to their friends, family and community. Gone are the days where we had to rely on a college degree to earn a sizable income. We are now able to start businesses in less than one week if you’re fast. But, if you’ve never done it before, how do you start your own business? And, how do you make your business successful?
Arbonne– (this is my friend April’s link) Arbonne has nutritional supplements & detox packages, skin care and makeup. Here’s why my friend April loves the company-  “the long-standing integrity of the company, commitment to quality & safety, focus on giving and serving others (not on personal gain) … but the compensation plan is incredibly generous which just frees you up to bless even more people.”

Do you want to work for a company that’s not focused on selling jewelry or cosmetics? You could consider Starion Energy, an electricity supplier in the deregulated energy market that is focused on breaking up the monopoly of electricity suppliers and giving consumers a choice on their provider. Starion has independent energy representative direct sales positions available, and more information can be found by contacting the email here.
Appreciate the hard work studying this… Im apart of the #1 company on there Advocare… have been for 7 years and one of the higher paid single guys in the nation… I just have to disagree with “over priced Products” comment. There is a mark up on every product in the world… Our products actually work which is why those endorsers you mentioned turn down high level incomes with other companies to endorse us for a stipend of products per month. Advocare has numerous people making a great profit and even more just enjoying a product they would pay double what they do for to feel the way they do. Success rate isnt low my friend… Its just the quit rate is through the roof. Highly recommend everyone seeing this and you sir to watch “Rise of the Entrepreneur” by Eric Worre on Itunes to get some serious facts about the MLM industry. Thanks for all the research and blessings!
I was browsing the web to see what other at home businesses are out there and ran across your post which I enjoyed. I wanted to share with you another opportunity out there called Perfectly Posh which specializes in naturally based, USA-made pampering products. It’s a one time starter kit which is $99 but you get over $150 worth full sized products, plus samples and printed papers to get you started. They have an online academy, tools to help you thrive, rewards and amazing perks. Commission starts out at %20 and goes up as you advance.
Seriously? MLMs are a plague on society. They’re dishonest & predatory in every way. They ruin lives, relationships & finances. If you’re going to promote such an awful choice, then you should share some REAL FACTS about the companies instead of just the positive. Actually there is NOTHING positive about any mlm. If you read something positive about them, it’s probably a lie posted by a hun trying to get sales. Why don’t you share the income disclosures if these companies are so great that you would actually suggest to people work for them? Look at the income disclosures of ANY MLM & you’ll see the FACT is that around 99% of every person who joins any MLM will lose money! They are pyramid schemes with an irrelevant, overpriced product to make it legal. Shame on you! I hope if anyone reads this awful article they do some real research before joining any of these scams!

Usborne Books is an America-based direct sales company established in 1989 and is an extension of Usborne Educational Development/Publishing Corporation founded in 1973 by Peter Usborne. Usborne Books has been recognized a couple of times as one of the best small companies in America. Its mission is to provide economic opportunity while nurturing family values and to deliver educational excellence. The company generates about $9.6 million in revenues every year.
Thanks for this post. Very helpful. I do like direct sales; one reason for this is that it helps keep alive that age-old tradition of people interacting face-to-face (rather than mainly through texting and social media). For that reason, I think MLMs should target the lonely Millennials. Anyway, I was a member/distributor of Advocare for over 10 years and still miss the products and the activities in the company, now that I am temporarily out. I still plan to sign up again when I can afford it (long story–I’ll spare you). I am now involved in Melaleuca, and I must say in their defense that Melaleuca’s products are actually not overpriced. Because Preferred Customers are not only not expected, but also NOT ALLOWED to turn around and sell the products at the retail price, everyone pays the same low prices. (Granted, one can indeed go to the website and buy directly from the company if they do not want to become a Preferred Customer. Why would someone do that when the annual membership is only $19? Only if they do not want to commit to the minimum monthly requirement for Preferred Customers.) Public, keep this in mind! Don’t be fooled by the rebels who are selling old Melaleuca products on Amazon for way above the retail price!! You’re much better off buying fresh products directly from the factory, even if you pay retail price. Just sayin. My big question: What about Tupperware? I have been a Tupperware consultant for about 6 months, and I have found it to be extremely difficult to keep business going. The directors training me have said that Tupperware is the second most widely recognized brand name in the world, second only to Coca-Cola. If that is the case, why is it so hard to find people willing to host Tupperware parties? Why does it seem so hard to sell? Also, is it just me…Or, does Tupperware’s compensation plan stink?

Trades of Hope- (this is my friend Shelby’s link) Trades of Hope is an amazing company committed to empowering women around the world out of poverty. Their fair trade model helps them support artisans all over the world by helping them earn a living wage. Here’s what Shelby loves about the company- “It’s such an honor to advocate on behalf of & empower women from around the globe to RISE UP out of poverty & human trafficking by selling their beautiful, handmade, fair trade goods & promote sustainability — for both Artisans & TOH Compassionate Entrepreneurs.”
Great list and I love receiving your emails for information as a home based business. I am independent consultant with Mannatech Australasia. We offer a range of Weightloss and Wellness products based on real food technology. I invite you all to pop over to my site where i have some information about our products. I am always interested to hear from other women who would like to work from home. I have just recently learned that ‘women setting up business from home is the fastest growing sector in the Australian economy’. Thank you and all the best
In my opinion, of all the direct sales companies to make money with, Scentsy practically sells itself. Their wax warmers come in a wide variety of styles to fit your décor, they plug in so there is no worry about an open flame, and the many fragrances they offer will suit the pickiest noses. I was amazed at how many scents I liked and how similar to nature’s own fragrances they were. Scentsy offers many resources to help consultants become successful. You can host actual home parties, basket parties (similar to a catalog party), and you can even have a booth at a local fair if you’d like. Commissions are based upon your consultant level, but you’re paid monthly and funds are transferred directly to a Scentsy debit card, which is very convenient.
Having studied the psychology and behavior of boomers, this example represents a major shift in my thinking about the industry.  I no longer perceive these types of opportunities as money-making pyramid schemes.  Instead, I now see it as a way to enhance many of the personal aspects of retirement that are rarely discussed let alone planned for, with the added benefit of supplementing other popular retirement income sources such as pension and social security.

As a mom of girls, I spend a lot of time thinking about the legacy I’m leaving for them. I want them to see me as a mom that loved them hard when I was with them, and then pushed past my fears and did hard things to love the world outside of our home. I am so proud of the work I do to empower women just like me to create better futures for their families, to send their own daughters to school, and I LOVE that my five year old is understanding that work and asking me more and more questions about it. This has created a global mindset in my home that I never expected, and a curiosity about cultures and different people that is just awesome to watch blossom. And honestly? Because what I’m doing is so much bigger than myself, when it’s time to do the daily tasks it takes to run a work-from-home gig, I find the energy and the inspiration to do it that I can’t imagine would be there if it weren’t for the women and the mission behind our products. I love our beautiful pieces. I love being a storyteller. I love being able to work 30 mins to an hour a day from my living room while my girls play. I love knowing that I am making a real and lasting impact on huge things like sex trafficking WHILE contributing to our income in a way that’s changing our lives too. It’s just all around the best job ever.
Paparazzi Jewelry is a great idea if you’re selling to fashionistas on a budget. Each piece is only $5, you’re able to choose by color and style and commission is generous at 45%. There are multiple starter kits available, including a $300 jewelry package, a $300 jewelry and hair package, a $700 large home party kit, a $1,400 small boutique starter kit or a $2,750 small event starter kit. With the kits, you also get party invitations, sales bags, display hooks, receipts, consultant applications, jewelry repair kit and more.
Norwex is also a great company to do direct sales with. Based out of Norway, the company has been around for over 20 years. They produce high quality microfiber cloths that can be used to clean your entire house with only water. Their mission is to reduce the use of toxic chemicals. 35% commission. No monthly dues or sales goals. They’ll send you your starter kit at no cost. All you have to do is sell $2000 in your first 90 days. If you don’t meet that goal you do have to pay $200 for your starter kit, but there are no other obligations. Lots of great incentives
The company is the premier U.S. maker of handcrafted maple wood baskets. We offer an extensive line of baskets from traditional baskets to seasonal baskets in your choice of 3 stain colors. Longaberger also offers, Coffee, Food, Totes, Collegiate and Team Spirit Baskets and our American Valor Line with all 5 Military branches available. Plus, Woven Traditions Pottery (the #1 selling dinnerware in the US) Home Accessories and our new Flameware Ceramic Cookware and more!
Since joining Mary Kay, I’ve met some absolutely incredible women. We’ve shared successes and failures in our weekly meetings. My sales leader has even customized the weekly meetings when I’m traveling so I can meet with my group by webinar. I don’t feel alone as a Mary Kay consultant I know I can reach out to my friends who are also Mary Kay reps, whenever I’m having difficulties. They completely understand me and help me get through whatever barriers I’m having in my business.

My name is Erin Pyka and I joined this new company all because I received a sample of the product and loved it! I am married to my amazing husband and we have two busy daughters who love being involved in dance and cheer. I also help take care of my grandparents and was a labor and delivery nurse working 12 hour shifts, so the idea of doing a “side gig” didn't sound appealing.
This one is debatable. Based on my observations, companies tend to do better when they have a physical presence for the corporate team to work. The idea of a “cloud based” office sounds nice, but in my opinion, it’s a little cheap and leads to less production. I think it’s important for executives to provide a consistent environment for people to come together during normal office hours and focus intensely on their duties to the company. There’s value in people coming together daily in a physical environment, sparking ideas off of each other at random times. If there’s no physical location, the company, in my opinion, is typically unable to adapt and change quick enough to stay ahead of the competition.
For 3 years I’ve been a part of a completely revolutionary company – Worldventures. I had the honor to personally meet and speak with the director of trainings, the CEO and the founder of the company – incredible men with pure hearts and enormous energy. What Worldventures is doing is completely changing the travel industry by helping people. The product is extraordinary and incredible but I’d like to share my personal vision and gratitude and why Worldventures.

I thought this article was fantastic. I currently work with an MLM and love it, but I definitely can see why MLM’s would have flaws. However, I also know for me it wasn’t about selling as much as it was SHARING. I have experienced more than a product, I have been able to share the gift of health and the gift of the business itself. I absolutely love it and people who join me in this mission are as passionate as well! I believe when we look at really loving people where they are and actually caring, success will come and not the other way around. That’s the only way I’ve been able to see it happen! Any who, thanks for the tips!

Hi Kierstin, this is a great list of DS companies. I researched a lot of these before signing up with Lilla Rose, whom I have been with for 18 months now. I just couldn't make myself pay a company for a website or have to sell a minimum quota each month regardless of my real job. I am a single mom with a full time job and two little ones (really little) so I wanted something that I would actually use and could sell to people with the purpose of sharing something that I genuinely think is awesome. Some months, I didn't have time to promote my product so I wanted a company where I didn't have to sell a minimum amount or have to maintain a website
Hi Jesse, That does help some…thanks for answering my questions. My other questions are: I am not connected with nearly as many people as it sounds like you are. How can I be successful in this business? Also, morally I struggle with charging someone more money for something that they can get somewhere else? I know…not much of a business acumen. Lol thanks,

We've just celebrated our Four Year Anniversary this month and are already getting major recognition from Vogue, NY Times, and have partnered with Target and J.Crew! Our other mission is transparency--both in our products-- in our mission to get safer products in the hands of everyone--and in our sales model. Every single cost and detail is laid out on the website!
#4- Set goals and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone- One of the big things that keeps people from getting their goals is being afraid! Signing up for a direct sales company and achieving success might push you a little outside what you are comfortable with, but that’s ok! Take baby steps and keep your goals in mind, that will help you push yourself!
First off, I think it's awesome that you and your friends are earning so well with It Works! As I mentioned in my post "selling for It Works requires an intense amount of motivation and work, without which you'll surely fail. This is more like a Work-At-Home career choice than a stay-at-home mom hobby. There seems to be an opportunity for serious cash here, but there's also opportunity to fail and lose money." It sounds like you've been diligent to work hard, hustle your products, and really own this business and that's the energy and effort it takes to make big bucks in any selling career. I did use the word "fail" but the context was in a person not applying themselves to the product. I think you would agree you've had to apply yourself because that's the nature of marketing and selling.

MLM and direct selling programs also offer very low barriers into entrepreneurship, often providing training, support, and ample encouragement along the way.  As retirees begin to realize they need activities that keep them busy, relevant, in good health, and connected to others, the time, energy and cost to participate in these kinds of companies make them very appealing to large segments of the population caught up in these dynamics.
Best MLM companies 2018 : For companies who wish to avoid spending huge amounts of money in the traditional way of advertising the Multi-Level Marketing scheme has proved itself to be of a more worthy and profitable way for promoting the companies with big business logo design and an overall servicing concept. Another positive aspect of the multi-level marketing is that it provides for the possibility for millions of active people and corporations that are not big enough to make profits. Beneath is the list of the most reliable, popular, recognizable and the best MLM companies as of Summer 2017.

Hello, I didn’t see Linen World and More listed above as one of the direct selling companies from home. Well, I am an Independent Linen World Consultant. Linen World company has been around for 35+ years providing our customers with quality items that you should see in every home. Linen World has great household items wrapped up in one exciting website. We have a lot to choose from.
I looked around and couldn't find any solid information on how much it costs to start up with J.R. Watkins or what you must sell to remain active. However, I did find some information that suggests it's $40 just to become a "member" and the price goes up from there for start-up kits. My advice is to visit the site and request information on the appropriate form.
There it is: MLM Company Rankings People usually think that the secret of succeed in a MLM business is offer the best product, or be part of the best company, AND THAT IS JUST NOT TRUE. What you really need, in order to get more leads, and more prospects, is a GOOD TRAINING. Be sponsored by a true leader in network marketing, and learn from him as much as you can. People are tired of receiving all kind of offers that guarantee them a huge monthly income, they don't look for offers any more, THEY LOOK FOR MARKETER LEADERS who can solve their problems THAT'S IT, and that's all what you must do. Be a leader so that people would look for you, instead of you trying to convince them to join your team. Here's a very interesting page were you can get 7 videos for free and learn a lot more of what I talked about. Magnetic Sponsoring If you would like to receive all my training guides and information by email you can contact me. Heres is my web site: http://www.mlmbestadvice.com and my Email:mlmbestadvice@gmail.com I would be pleased to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're disappointed in this post, however the idea behind this article was actually to come from the perspective of a stay-at-home mom so it is indeed an opinion and not necessarily a "fact based" article. You're right, from what I can find currently, the startup price to join It Works! is $99, not $100. I will update that in my article. I found that information on an unofficial It Works! blog called WrapItLoseIt.net where I read that the best starter package retails for $499. When I checked out the official It Works! website I was unable to locate any information directly from the company that indicates the actual startup costs of joining the company which I find frustrating as I'm sure others do as well. Would you mind posting a link to that here so others can find quick and clear information on It Works! without having to dig?

Hi JP. Good stuff all the way around, my man. Hey, I’ve been approached by Ariix, & didn’t know if have heard of them, and if so, a simple 👍 or 👎 will suffice, unless you’d like to elaborate, of course. One obvious concern I have is that (& can disclose this, since it’s of public record/knowledge per the list above), the current leadership in place at Ariix all came from USANA, and given the FBI/SEC became involved with USANA in ‘07, & Ariix opened in ‘11, well….I think you know from where I’m coming as it relates to anything you may be able to convey. Thx again, JP, for all of your efforts, & if you’d feel more comfortable in emailing me, obviously that would be perfectly fine! And apologies on this extremely verbose message!😳
I do not work for any of these companies. In fact, as of right now, I've never even worked in direct-sales. So, though I have researched these companies, what I've written here is merely my own observations and opinions and a list of companies I personally deemed the most trustworthy after much time culling the masses. I'm not guaranteeing that anyone will find themselves rolling in sweet, sweet cash by joining any of these companies.
http://www.idahofallsmagazine.com/2014/12/demystifying-Melaleuca does NOT fit any of the descriptions about multi-level marketing. Best double check. 😀 We had to. We thought it was until we looked closer. Opening Online Shopping Accounts! Not a “home parties” company, no inventory, and no delivering of products. Just a website! Best HOME BASED Business we have ever found. And we have been LOOKING! Thanks.
